Canberra – April 4-6, 2016
Several people, even those we met in Canberra, asked us why we were visiting the capital city. I answered that we wanted to see the capital of Australia. We were quite glad we did. Canberra is a designed city which was mostly built before WWII, but nothing happened for about 10 years during and after the war. It is now a lazy little town with wide boulevards and copious amounts of open spaces. We visited the parliament building, which was an architectural delight, and were able to do a self tour and look at the senate and house chambers as government was not in session. We climbed (in the car) a hill on the outskirts of the city for sweeping views and later found another hill with a tower and even more views. We visited the war memorial and the state library and generally had a very fine day.
Although we only spent one day in this lovely little town, we were glad to have visited. Aunt Maureen even said it was her favorite place in Australia. Seems like it should be on any itinerary to this country.
