Argentina – Salta

April 25, 2014

Finally we arrive in Salta. I have been looking forward to this portion of the trip for quite some times since the terrain in this region has been described as somewhat similar to the Atacama Desert, across the mountains in Chile. When we were in Chile I fell in love with the Atacama desert, its beautiful colors and green grassy riverbeds….the regions around Salta did not disappoint. We drove north up the Humauca? Valley and South to Cafayate in a 7-day tour and the terrain and views were stunning. Salta itself is a thriving city. Our arrival flight was late so we stayed in Salta the first night, and then on our way South. We didn’t spend a ton of time in the city, but enjoyed its lovely central square and the fantastic views from the park reached by taking a gondola ride up the nearest hill. This has to be the number one tourist attraction in Salta and it was a great afternoon adventure. Even the gondola stations were exceedingly lovely. At the top was a man-made water feature that had many levels of cascading waterfalls, it was right out of disney. We enjoyed a coffee and an ice cream at the top and then went back to check out the churches and the ped street downtown. We found a lovely spot for dinner, it was actually French/Argentinian fusion, and we had a great meal and experience. Prepare for lots of beautiful pictures coming up in the Pumamarca Blog!
