Argentina – San Martin de Los Andes
April 16 2014
Another ideally situated lake town seemingly built almost entirely for tourism, we found a lovely little bed and breakfast outside of San Martin complete with stunning views of the valley and the mountains. Close by we were able to do a very steep climb up about 3,000 feet for a fantastic view of the surrounding lakes, mountains, and the glaciated volcano towering over everything way in the distance. Again, we had a beautiful clear day for this hike and can add it to our swiftly growing list of completely fantastic day hikes. The town was small, and everything seemed to be made to look like a log cabin (in keeping with the style of most little towns in the lake district). It was quite quaint and lovely and we enjoyed dinner at a “mexican” restaurant for a change. I write the quotes because the food was only slightly idintifiable as what we would call Mexican, but since it was good in its own right, we aren’t complaining. A steep road out of town led us to a tea house with the most fantastic lake views. We certainly were lucky on timing, this far South the weather is like October in New England and the colors were just fantastic and added even more beauty to the stunning scenery. The days were a bit blistery, hovering near a high of 60 degrees, but that is great hiking weather. The evenings seem a bit cool, however, and we are looking forward to heading north for some warmer weather!
