We had decided it would be time to head out to the beach at this point, and had booked four nights in a palmy beach resort on Morro du Sao Paulo, north of Salvador. It was a bit of a long day getting there, requiring a walk, a bumpy wettish boat trip, being jammed into a mini-van with 10 other travellers, a transfer to another boat, a 20 minute walk and then a half-hour very very bumpy land rover drive to go the last 6 kilometers or so – YIKES! This took about 6 or 7 hours even though the total distance was not that great.
When we arrived, however, we had reached a simply beautiful oasis of palm trees, beach and lovely swimming pool with our own private cabana complete with porch hammock. It was pretty easy to while away the days at the beach, pool, or in said hammock. The town we had arrived in was very resorty, no cars aloud, and the beach was absolutely beautiful but almost completely covered with bars, restaurants, lounge chairs and other paraphanalia. We didn’t envision the ride to town being quite so long or arduous and although it probably would have been nice to have the option of the additional restaurants and the shops, we felt ok about spending most of the time at our secluded resort. We walked for miles down the beach and saw practically nobody.
The only problem was that it was really difficult to swim in the ocean because the water was so shallow that during low tide you had to walk out forever just to get to the water and in high tide, it was a long way until it was even up to your knees. Since the pool was in one of the most gorgeous palm surroundings, we decided not to let this upset us and ordered another coco gelado (chilled coconut) to sip on in the shade of the palm trees.
