An easy 3-hour shuttle got us from Antigua to Panajachel (Pana, to the locals). This is on lake Atitlan, which is rumored to be the most beautiful lake in Central America. The views do not disappoint. Stunningly beautiful peaks rising up out of the clear blue lake are fantastic. We had two whole days here to see the lake and environs. First day we took a water taxi across the lake to San Pedro, walked through the bustling streets to San Juan, took a tuc tuc to San Pablo, then a boat to San Marcos and another boat to Jabailito for lunch on the lake. Basically, we visited all of the saints, saw the locals doing what they do, and all on this beautiful lake with volcano views.
The next day it was off to the market at Chichicastenango (locals call Chichi thank God!). This is known to be one of the most extensive markets in Central America so we thought we shouldn’t miss it. We found that there were a lot of quality crafts here, but not so much local market flavor, which tends to be our favorite part. Nevertheless we had a little tour, got to see the “which doctors” and the fascinating interaction of the catholic and indigenous faiths in the town’s two chapels, and picked up a few cheap but nice odds and ends and souvenirs to bring home with us.
After the market, we were off to Iximche to see the ruins. This Mayan ruin is believed to be 3 to 4 thousand years old and was inhabited up until after the Spanish came and built a town close by. The excavated area was pretty extensive and it was obvious that the actual area was much wider. The setting was so beautiful and tranquil that we found ourselves envious of the Mayans who had lived in such a lovely place. Of course, it was much different when occupied but in current day there is an expanse of excavated walls, palaces and courtyards with grass growing everywhere and trees all around. It was a lovely and fascinating visit.
Unfortunately our last night in Pana was overshadowed by a bug that Stephen picked up along the way, and it was a long and not very restful night. We have been so lucky in our travels to be healthy, but every once in awhile something gets you, especially traveling in poorer areas. We are always very carful, but there is only so much you can prevent. Luckily, we were staying with an American who is a PA, and she gave us their Cipro stash since they were on their way home the next day. We are now on our way back to Guatemala city for an early flight out in the morning and Steve seems to be doing better. We will have to save our special Thanksgiving meal for another time!
