Next day we crossed the border to Uzbekistan and the bus took us to the heart of Tashkent, a bustling, modern city and the capital of Uzbekistan. The soviet art has been sort of a theme all along but the masterpiece that is the metro system is stunning to see. These stations are impeccably designed and decorated and if you add the now familiar squares, gardens and fountains, the overall effect is pretty impressive.
Russians were dominant here prior to soviet times and we see an old Romanov palace and some more classical buildings. We had the good fortune to be able to attend the ballet which played two short works by Stravinsky, Rite of Spring and Firebird, and we felt very clean and cultured after that event.
Other highlights were a trip to the fanstastic domed marketplace, some street art and a couple of gorgeous mosques.
Hope you enjoy the gallery of the city. I am skipping the photo explanations, trying to get caught up before the trip ends!!
