Munich – August 16th and 17th, 2013
Munich is the Bavarian capital and main tourist stop-over in this part of Germany. It is bustling with life and beer gardens and pedestrian streets abound. It has a great little tram system to get you to various areas of town. We spent a whole day walking, exploring, tramming and generally having a great time. The main square and the heart of the action, especially during Octoberfest is Marionplatz. This is where you can find the famous Glockenspiel, which is a clock that has an amazing display of life-size automotrons playing out two different traditional German folk stories each hour when it chimes. Pretty amazing! It is up on the Rathaus (town hall building). You have seen many rathaus pics already, but this one in the Bavarian capital is probably the largest and most ornate.
In the evening we went to the pagoda biergarten, which is located in a Munich park and is a vast area with many different beer tents, pretzel stands, sausage stands, and many hundreds of picnic tables. The festivities are enlivened by a brass band that plays above the crowd in a large wooden pagoda (It’s true!).
Although we enjoyed Munich, it really is tourist central and it was extremely crowded, albeit with a festive air. After two nights, we headed to Dresden.
